“A healthy (sangha) is made of people who are capable of being present for one another—not perfectly, but wholeheartedly.”
—Thich Nhat Hanh
What is a Buddhist Sangha?
A Buddhist sangha is a community that practices the Dharma (Buddha’s teachings) together. Sangha was taught by the Buddha as the third jewel, as the very embodiment of the first two jewels — the Buddha and the Dharma. He taught that sangha as friendship “… is the whole of the holy life.” Thich Nhat Hahn (one of the most revered sangha builders of our time) taught:
• “The Sangha is your teacher.”
• “Without a sangha, you cannot go far on the path.”
• “The next Buddha may take the form of a sangha.”
In the practice of mindful understanding and loving kindness, we have the opportunity to learn about and directly experience a life-changing paradigm shift wherein separateness is experienced as illusory, and interconnectedness and interbeing as true refuge.
Sangha can truly be a path home. Thich Nhat Hahn: “A true sangha is a home where you can return again and again.”
