Heart of Awareness Meditation Community
Our History and Traditions

The Heart of Awareness Meditation Community (HoA) was organized in 2011 under the guidance of Karin Miles, a longtime meditator and student of the dharma (teachings of the Buddha) in the Theravada Vipassana (Insight Meditation) tradition. Karin's commitment to meditation practice spans more than 30 years, 20 of them under the guidance of senior dharma teacher, DaeJa Napier.

In 2016, Karin Miles retired from an active role, passing leadership to Janet Reichert, who upholds Karin's values and intention for The Heart of Awareness. Janet, also a long-time meditator and student of the dharma, attends Meditation retreats several times each year, and also studies with a senior dharma teacher.

The community outgrew its original borrowed spaces in the homes of its members and moved to its current location (Click here for map) in January 2015. Since then, meditation opportunities and study groups have expanded and the community has offered various retreat and workshop experiences to its members as well as to the general public.

Since the community was founded, it has been dependent on the generosity of participants in both their volunteer efforts for organization and programs and for their financial support. A small advisory committee participates in oversight of the community.
